EEG Ambulatory

Extended brain activity monitoring in a real-world setting to capture intermittent neurological events.

An Ambulatory EEG is a prolonged electroencephalogram that records brain activity continuously over an extended period, typically 24 hours or longer while you go about your normal daily routine.

Electrodes are placed on the scalp and connected to a portable recording device worn discreetly. This allows brain wave activity to be monitored over a longer timeframe, increasing the likelihood of capturing intermittent or infrequent events.

Ambulatory EEG testing is commonly used to investigate:

  • Infrequent or intermittent seizure-like episodes
  • Suspected epilepsy not confirmed on routine EEG
  • Unexplained blackouts or transient loss of awareness
  • Nocturnal (night-time) events
  • Monitoring response to anti-seizure medication

Extended recording improves diagnostic sensitivity when events are not captured during a standard EEG.

To help ensure accurate results, please:

  • Wash your hair prior to the appointment
  • Do not apply hair products (gel, spray, oil, conditioner)
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows space for the recording device
  • Continue taking usual medications unless advised otherwise
  • Bring a list of current medications

You will receive clear written instructions before leaving with the device.

Is the test painful?

No. The electrodes sit on the scalp and do not deliver any electrical current. The test is completely painless.

How long will I wear the monitor?

Most ambulatory EEG studies last 24 hours, although longer recordings may be requested depending on clinical need.

Can I continue normal activities?

Yes. You should continue most normal daily activities, unless specifically advised otherwise. Bathing or showering is usually not permitted while wearing the device.

When will I receive results?

Once the recording is analysed, a formal report is produced and sent securely to your referring clinician to support next-step management.
